Portland Streetcar
Streetcar Lofts

Portland, Oregon
Placemaking, Wayfinding

Portland’s streetcar system used to be the largest in the United States, but by 1950 the last streetcar was gone. No longer! The opening of the Portland Streetcar line in 2001 made Portland the first city in North America to build a modern system with modern vehicles, shaping a new neighborhood in the process. Towards the north end of the Pearl District, the AK-designed Streetcar Lofts building ID celebrates urban living while paying tribute to the historic 1948 “GO BY TRAIN” sign at the nearby Amtrak station. Today the streetcar system continues to expand, making tracks across the city just as the streetcar’s logo suggests.
